The Monument Area

Goldsboro Rifles Monument, March 20, 1895

You are looking at the Goldsboro Rifles Monument erected in 1895, the first monument on the battlefield.

The individual graves behind the monument under the pine trees are that of Confederates treated by Union surgeons at the Harper House field hospital and cared for by the Harper family following the battle.

Behind the Confederate graves is the Harper family cemetery where John, Amy, and many of their children and family members lay in rest.

The other monuments in the area were erected after the Goldsboro Rifles monument honoring soldiers who fought and died here at Bentonville.
